News: UK government advises its citizens against travel to Jamaica.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FDCO), a branch of the UK government, has advised its citizens against travelling to the island unless it is absolutely necessary.

On the government's website it says, "FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the whole of Jamaica based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks."

The latest travel advisory was issued on May 6, 2021.

The FCDO also reminded Britons that "it is illegal to travel abroad from the UK for holidays", adding that only essential travels could be allowed and people can only leave the country if they have a reasonable excuse. The condition applies to both UK and non-UK passport holders currently residing in England.

The government body said over 225,000 British nationals visited Jamaica in 2019, and most of the visits were trouble-free. The advisory comes five (5) days after  Jamaica's travel ban on the UK expired on May 1. The Jamaican government at that time had also indicated that they would not extend the ban, with the hope that it would encourage travellers from that country to boost the country's COVID-19 ravaged tourist industry.

British Airways subsequently resumed flights to and from Jamaica on Wednesday and Virgin Atlantic should restart its flights between the two countries on May 18.
