MOTIVATION: How to make good of a bad situation.

In this life we will experience challenges or set backs. Bad things happen to all of us from time to time. This article will share the tools you need to turn a bad situation into something good for you.

1. Acknowledge your pain/disappointment or your wrong in the situation

It is okay to express your disappointment about a bad situation. At this time the biggest hindrance to our dreams or opportunities may be the Covid-19 virus. So many people have lost their jobs or businesses and they feel like they're in a tailspin, not sure what to do next. Additionally, the "stay at home/shelter in place" orders governments across the world have imposed, have taken a mental toll on so many people. It's natural for you to feel overwhelmed, worried or stressed especially at this time.

If you did something to betray someone's trust and want to gain that trust again, you have to admit that what you did was wrong and realise that you have hurt your friend, lover, spouse or business associates. You may feel grieved about what you've done, and that is okay. In fact, that is the first step in making a change.

You therefore have to own those emotions and acknowledge that this is what you are now feeling. You don't have to pretend that you have it all together. If you don't acknowledge how you feel it will be difficult for you to come quickly out of the emotional rut you're experiencing. And you need to.

2. Review the problem objectively

How did you get into the situation in the first place? Did you make a bad decision? What was it? After acknowledging what you feel (had your cry, etc) you need to objectively review what threw you off your game.

Think carefully and identify what factors led to the issue at hand. Do not however engage in a blame game. That won't help! Make peace with the situation and now recognise that the things that happened have already passed.  Now it's time to examine the pitfalls and develop strategies to ensure you're prepared for the next challenge.

3. Make a plan

Going through what went wrong should help you to think about what you can do to redeem the situation. If it is that you need to humble yourself and make amends with someone you have offended, then you need to ask yourself: How can I fix this? Sometimes saying sorry is not enough. You may need to think of ways to show the person you truly have repented of your actions.

If it's a case where you're in debt and the creditors are hounding at your door, you need to create a plan as to how you will "redeem" the situation and pay them back. Hence, write down all the things you think you need to do to get back on your feet. Make a detailed list using simple language so it makes it easier for you to go back and review. Make each also clear and easy; small but effective steps to ensure you get the work done bit by bit. Have several copies of your plan. Have a hard copy and have it also stored electronically. Commit to the idea of making your plan come to pass.

4. Seek advice

You have your plan but now you want to make sure it actually works! Seek advice. Legal, medical, whatever advice necessary to make sure what you want to happen does. Consult with expert advice, do research online and also read any literature that can assist you with what you're doing. Don't be afraid to ask for advice. If you don't know, how will you know if you don't ask for help? Make sure you check as many resources as possible to ensure you have all the issues you may face covered.

5. Take action a step at a time.

Folks often say life is a journey, true; the road to success is also a journey. A journey riddled with mountains, valleys and often potholes! Work your plan but don't be surprised if obstacles come. In fact, you should expect them! What you should do is resolve to not give up. Recognise also that the first time you try something new it may not work out the way you expected but it doesn't mean you should give up. You must keep going! Stick to the goal and where necessary tweak your plan to adjust to the situation at hand. But everyday get up and work towards making your life better!
